    My New York Experience

    Chelsea Hughes | 18 | Merseyside

If I could describe my trip in 3 words it would be emotional, unforgettable, and human. Volunteering in itself is rewarding, yet working with children opens your eyes to things you would never have thought about. You hear about New York everywhere you go- from having the New York skyline in your bedroom to watching Elf; it certainly lived up to my expectations.

Visiting New York has been on my bucket list for as long as I could remember and I would recommend this experience to absolutely everyone. Of course I wanted to go sightseeing, but volunteering with HYPE was incredible and it genuinely changed my perspective on life. I learned to be more open, make each day count and laugh until your stomach aches. I also got the opportunity to make friends for life. However, it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows (specifically on the city bus tour.)

I could see how my presence was changing children’s lives just by listening, and I learned how invaluable this experience truly was. I never thought about working with children before, but I enjoyed every minute of it and it’s something I will hopefully be doing in the future. With the opportunities HYPE provides you with, there isn’t a place you couldn’t go.

You visit the most infamous parks in the world from Central Park to Hudson River Park and there is no better feeling than seeing your work improve the environment around you. From weeding to cutting perennials, you really do make an impact. When it comes to the parks themselves, imagine every corner being used to its full extent with the community taking care of the environment (a shocker, I know.) There wasn’t a space left untouched. More specifically, I really enjoyed playing basketball with the children and teaching the British delicacy that is Rounders. I also got the chance to go roller skating in Hudson River Park which was pretty cool.

I’d say the highlight of my trip was protesting across Brooklyn Bridge with the children. We got to bring attention to topics like underfunded healthcare, unjustified violence and nutrient-dense foods in schools. I got particularly close with one of their staff members, Jaylen. We spoke about American culture, college, what he was studying but my favourite part was having no idea about the future in common. It reassured me that we don’t need life to be exactly planned and it’s okay to just go with the flow. Thanks Jaylen, for your wise words and company.

Remember those 3 words I mentioned before? They only scratch the surface when it comes to my experience. You go through extreme highs and lows when working with children and you become emotionally attached. There’s a sense of vulnerability when it comes to this experience; however, it reminds you to stay true to yourself and be human. You also face challenges which may make you uncomfortable but HYPE supports you all the way.  You get to make memories that last you a lifetime from seeing Times Square to becoming familiar with Brooklyn’s finest graffiti.

Finally, my top tips for this trip include throwing yourself in the deep end by participating in all the activities, get to know the staff at HI4Y and don’t be shy around the group you’re with. Bring enough black shorts, sun cream and potentially a small fan (I learned this the hard way.) Make a scrapbook and finish each day with a journal entry. Face challenges head on and if you get the opportunity to stay at HI4Y like I did, don’t fear the unknown. The best things come from pushing yourself out of your comfort zone.

Thanks to Matt, Michelle, Tammy, and the group for the trip of a lifetime.
